A beach trip is when your skin gets the harshest sun of the year: direct sunlight from above, plus light bouncing back off the sand and water. Many people remember sunscreen and still come home with sore shoulders and a burnt neck. This checklist gathers the beach sun protection worth packing for the whole family, with tips on choosing each item so your bag stays light.

Why it is easier to burn at the beach

At the beach you get sun from above and reflected light from the sand and water. The sea breeze keeps you cool, so you stay out longer without noticing the heat. Water and sweat wash sunscreen off quickly. UV levels usually peak around the middle of the day; the World Health Organization advises protection and shade once the UV Index reaches 3 or more. Checking the UV Index in your weather app before heading out is a good habit.

A wide-brim hat: the most useful thing you can pack

A hat shades your face, ears and neck all at once, exactly where clothing cannot reach and sunscreen washes off. When picking a beach hat:

  • Go for a wide brim, around 7 cm or more, to cover your ears and neck.
  • Make sure it has a chin strap or elastic, because sea wind is strong.
  • Choose one that folds or rolls so it survives the suitcase.
  • Look for a sweat-absorbing band and fabric that dries fast.

Caps and visors are cooler but leave your ears and neck exposed. Browse wide-brim sun hats.

Sun shirts for the beach

At the beach, a shirt should be light and dry quickly. A thin hooded jacket works for walks and beachside cafes. For swimming, a long-sleeved rash guard covers the shoulders and back, the spots that burn first. Note that wet fabric usually blocks less sun than dry fabric, so change into something dry or move into the shade when you come out of the water. For shirts with a UPF rating, read what UPF means to see how to check it. See also women's sun shirts.

UV-blocking sunglasses

Glare off the water and sand tires your eyes quickly. Lens darkness does not tell you how much UV is blocked, so look for glasses clearly labelled as UV-blocking or UV400. Polarised lenses make it easier to see when the water is glaring. Wraparound frames stop light sneaking in from the sides. Children should have their own pair that fits, with a strap so they do not lose them.

Sun protection for kids

Young children can dig and splash for hours without noticing the sun. The simplest approach is a long-sleeved top, a hat with a neck flap and regular breaks in the shade. Choose hats with a chin strap and tops with a zip guard at the chin. For babies under six months, health guidance usually recommends keeping them out of direct sun and asking a paediatrician before using sunscreen. Browse kids' sun shirts and hats.

Tips for an easier trip

  • Go to the beach early in the morning and late in the afternoon, and rest in the shade at midday.
  • Bring a separate bag for wet things so your hat and glasses stay dry.
  • Rinse shirts and hats in fresh water when you get back so salt does not stiffen the fabric.
  • If you get a severe burn with blistering or fever, see a doctor.

Questions people ask

What hat is best for the beach?
A wide-brim hat with a chin strap that packs flat. Caps are cooler but leave your ears and neck exposed.
Can I swim in a sun shirt?
Rash guards are made for the water. Regular sun jackets are not ideal: wet fabric gets heavy, dries slowly and usually blocks less sun than when dry.
